The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park lies in southwestern Uganda along the edge of the Rift Valley. It contains Uganda’s oldest and most biologically diverse rainforests dating back over 25,000 years, and it contains no less than 400 species of plants. More famously, this mist covered “impenetrable forest” also protects an estimated 320 mountain gorillas – half of the world’s population. Amongst these are several habituated groups, which can be tracked.
There are approximately 120 species of mammals which included several species of baboon and chimpanzee, as well as elephants and antelopes. There are about 350 species of endemic birds hosted in the forest which include 23 rare Albertine Rift endemics.
Luxury lodges, rustic bandas (huts) and budget campsites can be found in and around the towns of Buhoma and Nkuringo. The towns also provide a range of restaurants, craft stalls and good guiding services. Visit and observe the local Bakiga and Batwa, last of the Pygmy cultures through their performances, workshops and guided village walks.
