Best time to travel:
April to September, the dry autumn and winter months when the days are warm and nights pleasantly cool are the best months to plan a visit. The spring and summer months can be hot and humid and protection against malaria is necessary. On occasions cyclones from across the Indian Ocean bring flooding to Mozambique and its immediate neighbours during October to March.
Maputo (formerly Lourenco Marques) is the capital of Mozambique, once a Portuguese colony. Its colonial history is reflected in its beautiful old buildings. Similar to Angola, a civil war in the 1960s to 1980s unfortunately destroyed not only many of the buildings but also its economy. However since the 1990s with the assistance of South Africa, Mozambique has recovered to such a degree that today it is again a desired tour destination. There are many beautiful coastal resorts to choose from where water sports and fishing are the main activities. Traditional Portuguese foods and locally brewed beer are enjoyed in the city’s many upmarket restaurants.
Night life attracts many of the younger generations to its bars and discos. The city has once again become vibrant and popular. Several National Parks and Game Reserves offer a variety of wildlife and new lodges and resorts have opened on the well known island of Inhaca along its tropical coast all the way to Beira.
Inhaca Islands
The well known Mozambique island of Inhaca is 52²km big. It lies within the larger Maputo Bay. It is part of the larger municipality of the capital of Mozambique, Maputo. Its highest point is Mount Inhaca 104m above sea level. There is an airstrip surrounded by two wetland areas. Most of the population live in five small villages which are: Inhaca, Inguane, Nhaquene, Rijeni and Tobia. Fishing and watersport are the two most popular activities enjoyed by tourists.
