Best time to travel:
The best time to visit is during its annual flooding in July and August when the waters from the Angolan highlands and mountains reach the Delta.
Africa’s largest natural wetland is the Okavango Delta of Botswana. It covers much of central and north-western Botswana. Its main tributary, the Kavango River flows annually (March to July) down from the Angolan highlands across Namibia’s Caprivi Strip and Kalahari to discharge approx. 11 cubic km of water into the Delta, magically transforming it from a generally dry savannah into a rich wetland. This results in migratory movement of wildlife from the dryer hinterland to the Delta region. Numerous islands are formed and it is here where you find fine lodges from where to explore by boat the many channels formed across the Delta. The largest of these islands is Chief’s Island which formed along a tectonic fault line. Many of the smaller islands are the result of vegetation growing on large termite mounds.
Okavango Delta became the 1000th site on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014. It is generally a well protected area with the Moremi Game Reserve along its eastern border and many private wildlife concessions within Ngamiland. Throughout the year and its wet and dry seasons the Okavango Delta is known for its abundant and varied wildlife. It is still one of Africa’s supreme birdlife areas. Some of Africa’s premier wildlife lodges and camps are part of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. These include the Mombo and Kanana Camps.
