Popular regions in Botswana
- Excellent Wildlife viewing
- World’s largest salt pans
Best time to travel:
Wildlife viewing is seasonal and dependent on when the rains come during the months of December to April when the animals migrate. There are several artificial watering points to support wildlife during dry periods.
Makgadikgadi covers an area of 12 000²km about the size of Portugal. It consists of a wide, featureless plain largely uninhabited by humans. It is also one of the largest natural salt pans on earth. It consists of a number of interlinked pans. For many months of the year it is desolate and arid causing large mammals to be absent. Once the rains have come the seasonal rivers of Nata, Tutume, Semowane and Mosetse flood and pour into the Sowa and Ntwetwe Pans to the east and west and with it the wildlife returns in numbers as the grass grows. North of these two pans are Kudiakam pan, Nxai Pan and Kaucaca Pan. Interspersed between the pans are sand dunes, rocky islands and peninsulas, and desert terrain.
Herds of zebra and wildebeest are the most spectacular to observe. The flamingoes, often exceeding hundreds of thousands in number, fill the wet areas and are an amazing vision to behold. During the years of ample exceptional rain the Boteti river in the west adds its waters to the Okavango. It is an amazing spectacle as the lake turns powder-blue in colour and forms a beautiful shoreline. The fringes are covered in grasslands and some of the largest Boabab trees are found on rocky outcrops and islands. Researchers have theorized that Makgadikgadi was once the biggest inland lake of Africa.
The Makgadikgadi Pans Game Reserve – with an area of 3 900² kms – incorporates the western end of Ntwetwe an extensive grass and acacia woodland. At its northern boundary, it meets the Nxai Pan National Park, separated by the Nata- Maun Road. In the wet season, this reserve can offer good wildlife viewing, particularly when large herds of zebra and wildebeest begin their westward migration to the Boteti region. Other species include gemsbok, eland and red hartebeest, as well as kudu, bushbuck, duiker, giraffe, springbok, steenbok, and even elephant, with all the accompanying large predators, as well as the rare brown hyena.
Humans have inhabited areas of the pans since the Stone Age, and have adapted to climatic changes as they have occurred. Archaeological sites on the pans are rich with Early Man’s tools, and the bones of the fish and animals he ate. Human inhabitation has continued to the present day; and a number of villages, including Mopipi, Mmatshumo, Nata, Gweta and Rakops, are situated on the fringes of the pans.
Nxai Pan National Park
Nxai Pan with its area of 2 100²km is part of the great Makgadikgadi complex. It comprises of three individual pans: Nxai, Kgama-Kgama and Kudiakam Pan, which were once ancient salt lakes. They are now grassed with scattered islands of acacia trees and smaller pans that fill with water during the rainy season, providing rich resources for wildlife.
Common species found at Nxai are zebra, wildebeest, springbok, impala, gemsbok, hartebeest, giraffe, lion, cheetah, wild dog, brown hyena, bat-eared fox, and sometimes elephant and buffalo. The park is one of the more accessible areas of the Makgadikgadi complex 50 kms from the Nata-Maun Road.
