Popular regions in Botswana
Best time to travel:
The Kalahari can be visited year-round for great game viewing. However it is generally thought that the rainy season is the best time to view wildlife, as the herds concentrate in the valleys to feed on the lush grasses that have come up after the rains. Hot summer season from round about October until April.
84% of Botswana is covered by the semi-arid Kgalagadi terrain. It covers a total of 2,5² million km. Although it can easily be regarded as a desert it is rich in natural resources. It has large sweeping grasslands that feed up to 2 million cattle and a rich variety of wildlife. Botswana’s diamonds have been the back-bone of their burgeoning economy over the past 30 years. The Kalahari has an astonishing rich fauna and flora diversity, even though parts of it looked sparsely grassed and shrub and tree belts appear to be limited. There are large basins locally referred to as sedimentary pans that flood seasonally and where the grass grows quick after good rains to feed many species of wildlife.
Botswana prides itself for its well protected herds of wildebeest, zebra, kudu, gemsbuck, eland as well as the Kalahari lion, leopard and cheetah. Both the brown and spotted hyena are at home on the Kgalagadi Savannah. Human inhabited the region way back during the Middle Stone Age. The San people previously referred to as the Bushman too survived in this dry open savannah and were known as superb hunters in parts of the land presently occupied by cattle farmers. With the influx of tourist the past 40 years Botswana too has set aside land for five National Parks and Game Reserves. These are the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Makgadikgadi Pans, Khitse Game Reserve, Nxai Pan National Park and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
